Logo tutorial 40 Base Management 01: Automatic Item Sorting is a Tutorial.

This tutorial will show you how to create an automatic sorting system using Logistics Pipes.

Required Items[]

Setup[]

For demonstration purposes, we will not use flooring. In a regular setup, the pipes running between the chests would be one or two blocks beneath the floor. Keep that in mind when you are setting up a sorting system in your own base.

1. Place a Slow Electric Engine and hook it up to a power source like a BatBox. Make sure that your power source can continually provide at least 3 EU/t. If you do not yet have a power generation setup, build a couple of Solar Panels or check this tutorial for an alternative power generation setup. Place a lever besides the engine.

2. Place a Wooden Transport Pipe in front of the engine, put an Ender Chest on top of it, and connect it to a Basic Logistics Pipe.

3. Connect the Basic Logistics Pipe from Step 2 to a regular Stone Transport Pipe, lead the pipe to your storage area and place as much Basic Logistics Pipe in a straight line as you need chests for storage.

4. Place chests from the Iron Chests mod right on top of the Basic Logistics Pipes from step 3. Do not use regular wooden chests, as those cannot be placed right beside each other.

5. Equip the BuildCraft Wrench and perform a Right Click on a Basic Logistics Pipe beneath a chest. This opens a GUI where you can specify which items go into the attached inventory (in your case, the chest above). To do so, take an item from your inventory and place it in one of the slots - this will create a copy of that item in the interface, and all items of that type will now be placed in this chest. Repeat for all other chests.

6. Place signs right above the chests and label them according to the content you have specified in step 5, so that you know which chests store which items.

7. To deal with random stuff that enters the sorting system, we need a "default" chest. Place an additional Basic Logistics Pipe and put a Diamond Chest above it. You can use regular Iron Chests or Gold Chests as well, a Diamond Chest is recommended, however.

8. Equip a BuildCraft Wrench and perform a Right Click on the Basic Logistics Pipe from step 7. Set the "Default Route" button to Yes. This will ensure that all items that do not have a specified chest will be transported to this chest instead.

Flip the switch you have placed in step 1, and you are good to go.

How it works[]

The Wooden Transport Pipe will draw the items out of the Ender Chest and pass them on to the Basic Logistics Pipe. Once an item enters this logistics pipe network (indicated by the green parts of the connected logistics pipes), it will be automatically redirected to the specified chests.

If you are mining, take and Ender Pouch with you and make sure that it has the same color combination as the Ender Chest you have placed in step 2. When you are running out of inventory space, place some of your stuff in the Ender Pouch, and this setup will automatically sort it into the corresponding chests.

If you have the Forestry mod installed, the initial Ender Chest provides a very convenient way to sort your mining yield: Just put your backpacks into "emptying mode" and empty them into the Ender Chest, and the setup will automatically sort the deposited items into the chests you have specified.
